بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
We praise Allah, the Lord of the heavens and earth, who sent to mankind a Light from Him (peace and blessings be upon him), and sent through him guidance from His eternal speech. May the best benedictions and peace be upon the light giving lamp, Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), who was the embodiment of the guidance of our Lord and the best example for mankind. To proceed:
In the hopes of educating my family regarding the prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I acquired many books written on his life. Having read through them and attempted to share them directly with my family, I found that there was nothing suitable for what I was seeking. I wanted a text which could be read in a short period of time but yet comprehensive enough to give the major details which every Muslim should know. I also wanted a text which was based solely on the most sound opinions and yet not just a collection of facts and data. It was my hope that the text would inspire love and appreciation while also instilling a solid education and I also hoped for a text which, though short and easy to read, could be opened up and expounded upon. Unfortunately, I didn’t find a text that satisfied me in all of these regards.
This in no way is meant to disparage the many, many great and beautiful books detailing the life of Allah’s beloved! From the many books available, many are priceless gems that every home would be honored if adorned with them. What is more, many are the great gnostics who had experiential knowledge of the prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) whom I would be unfit to even study beneath them, let alone claim that I am a peer to them in any way. As such, I in no way seek the speak ill of the great scholars or their works. I am simply saying that I didn’t find that which sufficed my aims and criteria.
I decided, as this was an effort for my family, to go ahead and write one myself. Having studied and received Ijaazah (license) in the seerah of our beloved prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) from one of my teachers, Sheikh Hassan Al-Kettani (may Allah preserve him), this effort is connected to our Islamic tradition of scholarship and is not one of the severed projects of modernity. Still, The aim was not to add to the many books in circulation, this was meant as a text for my family, hopefully generation after generation. The aim was to serve as a concise yet comprehensive text that was based upon the strongest positions, collected in such a way to educate as well as inspire so that my family could come to know and love the beloved (peace and blessings be upon him).
The texts consists of an introduction, 22 chapters on the prophet’s life (peace and blessings be upon him) and a conclusion. Along with this, is seven appendixes. These seven appendixes cover matters of faith, belief and understanding which I believe to be obligatory or highly recommended for every Muslim to know. In this way, a general foundation is established in this text. Every section is three pages or less in order to facilitate ease of reading. If a person was to join the introduction with the first chapter and the conclusion with the final chapter, by reading just ten minutes, completing one chapter each day, the text can be completed every 29 days (22 chapters + 7 appendixes). In this way, every lunar month the text can be completed, hence the biography of Allah’s beloved (peace and blessings be upon him) would be read at least 12 times each year. In this way, a solid foundation can be established and the seeds of love and appreciation sowed.
As I mention in the introduction, how does one put such a great and weighty life in a text of 65 pages or less? Simply put, you don’t. There are many matters left out, and perhaps some errors that have crept in (such as the misspelling of He monk’s name on page 12. It is written as Buhairah when it should be Bahirah!), Still, I have done my best and I pray this serves my family well. Still, after some time has past, I have decided to share the text with others. The reason for this decision is mostly selfish…I am very much aware of my shortcomings and I am hopeful that by sharing this text, I will benefit someone and find some good from it on the day I will be in need the most. In this way, I am simply hoping that Allah places acceptance in this text, makes it a means of benefit for others, and hence, a benefit from me in the hereafter. What is more, I hope that those who read it remember my family in their supplications and so, I am hopeful that by sharing it openly, I add to its benefit for my family.
The reality of all of this is that all acceptance and blessings, all benefits and virtues, and every success is with Allah alone and so we ask Him for this with regard to this effort and we seek His forgiveness for myself, my family, the readers, their families and the entire ummah of His beloved (peace and blessings be upon him). We seek this and we ask the best benedictions and peace be upon our prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and we praise Allah knowing our own deficiencies and need of Him, and we are grateful for His mercy and blessings upon us…ameen.
Indeed, with Him alone is every success.
